Efficient cable heating systems

Cable systems is an innovative heating technology that provides efficient conversion of electricity into heat and is widely demanded in various fields of activity. In industry, cable heating is used in almost all technological processes where water, oil, oil or fuel oil is used.

Cable electric heating

In cable heating systems, heat is generated due to the electrical resistance of the cable: when moving electrons collide with particles of the heating core material, mechanical energy is converted into heat. Heating conductors of heating electric cables are made of conductive alloys and high resistance metals such as nichrome, nickel-plated copper and heat-resistant steel. For thermal insulation, fiberglass, foamed synthetic rubber, mica, fluoropolymers are used; the intensity of heat production is regulated by thermostats and temperature sensors.

Cable electric heating provides many advantages – cost-effectiveness, simplified installation and maintenance, extended system life, reliability in operation. Cable heating systems do not require maintenance, do not depend on voltage surges and are not damaged by aggressive media, moreover, the flexibility of the electric cable expands the possibilities of installing heating systems in hard-to-reach areas.

Types of cable heating systems

The first acquaintance of the mass consumer with the possibilities of electric cable heating took place thanks to the “warm floor” heating systems. The electric cable, laid under the floor covering, ensured uniform heating of the surface up to 22–26 ˚C due to the precise distribution of sections of the same size. Since then, the range of heating systems based on a heating cable has expanded; there were actual offers for industrial facilities:

  • accompanying piping, pump, tank and tank systems;
  • anti-icing and snow melting systems;
  • systems to prevent soil freezing under refrigeration units;
  • tape heaters for devices with easily damaged surfaces.

Heating cable types

Depending on the number and arrangement of current-carrying conductors, there are two types of heating cables – resistive and self-regulating. Cables are also divided into three categories depending on design features, scope of application, characteristics of conductive and insulating materials and scope of application:

  • zonal – consist of low resistance conductors connected by a heating coil;
  • with mineral insulation – designed for laying under asphalt, including hot;
  • mats of constant power – mounted on a stack when installing anti-icing systems.

Resistive cables are single and two-core conductors of fixed resistance and length, protected by three-layer insulation, resistant to aggressive environments. For thermal insulation, fluoropolymers are used that can withstand heating up to 300 ˚C; on top there is a screen made of aluminum or copper, a PVC coating is applied to the surface of the braid. The use of resistive cables requires high installation skills, since they cannot be cut, and in the event of an overlap, they overheat and quickly fail.

Self-regulating cable, consisting of two conductors and a temperature-sensitive polymer matrix, changes the level of resistance, adapting to environmental conditions and reducing energy consumption. Self-regulating electric cables are as economical as possible, they can be cut into sections and do not overheat when overlapping, however, they are less durable than resistive ones.

Application of cable heating systems

The main task of industrial-type cable systems is to create and maintain an optimal temperature regime: in construction – for hardening binders, in industry – for heating compact technological rooms, heating frozen objects and maintaining the fluidity of transported media at low temperatures, preventing crystallization of liquids and the formation of traffic jams. Heating the hoppers before starting helps to clean the filters from dust and condensation, as a result of which bulk products do not stick to the walls.

Anti-icing and snow melting systems are used to heat stairs, entrances, ramps, paths, platforms, roofs and gutters, and powerful cable systems are installed at airports to heat the runway. Increased requirements are imposed on the insulation of industrial cable systems: electrical cables for anti-icing systems must be highly durable, and for internal heating cables of pipes in contact with corrosive media, an inert fluoropolymer sheath is required.

Power Consumption

Cable heating is characterized by high energy efficiency: the power consumption of the system is equal to the heat transfer, i.e. is determined exclusively by heat losses. Considering that underfloor heating systems are usually used in addition to traditional heating systems, electric heating consumes about half of the design power:

  • in living quarters, hallways and kitchens – 120 kW/sq. meter;
  • in bathrooms – 150 kW/sq. meter;
  • on insulated loggias and balconies – 180-210 kW/sq. meter.

Cable systems of electric heating from “AVR PLUS”

The AVR PLUS company installs underfloor heating systems, as well as anti-icing systems:

  • roofs
  • ramps
  • pipelines
  • tanks
  • gutters
  • downpipes
  • funnels

Snow melting systems eliminate the formation of ice in pipes and gutters, on the edges of roofs and in other places of ice formation.

When calculating and designing cable heating, reference data are corrected taking into account the characteristics of the heated room, therefore it is better to entrust the development of project documentation to specialists. Settlement assignments are accepted on the website of the company “AVR Plus”: leave a request through the contact form or call us, and we will advise you on all technical and organizational issues.
