Motor protection devices

The electric motor functions stably in normal mode, but can fail in emergency situations – power surges, overheating, short circuits, etc. Operational shutdown of the electric drive in emergency modes minimizes the negative consequences of an accident, preventing damage to the engine and other elements of the power grid.

What is motor protection for?

Electrical protection of the drive extends the life of trouble-free operation and increases the reliability of the electrical installation, preventing accidents and equipment downtime. With a rational selection of equipment, the installation of electrical protection will soon pay off; The greatest economic effect is brought by complex solutions that combine several methods of protection:

protection of electric motors against short circuit – turns off the motor when short-circuit currents appear;
protection of electric motors against overload – used in electrical installations subject to overloads, in difficult starting conditions and with a prolonged start due to a decrease in voltage, implemented by means of circuit breakers and relays;
protection of electric motors from overheating – opens the main or control circuit in response to the operation of thermal sensors that detect the heating of the engine.

Motor protection methods

Apparatus for protecting the electric drive is selected depending on the parameters of the network, power, type and purpose of the electrical installation, operating conditions, etc. For motors up to 1 kW, protection against short circuits and overloads is sufficient, for more powerful installations and special operating conditions, complex protective devices may be required.

Fuses

A fuse is a disposable short-circuit protection device that melts or breaks under the action of short-circuit currents and opens the power circuit. In most cases, motor short circuit protection via fuses operates quickly, but does not protect the drive from overloads; such devices are used in low-power networks. Less common are fuses with a delay, combining the functions of protection against short circuit and against overloads, withstanding impulses five times higher than the nominal value for 15 seconds.

Auto switch

Automatic switches protect electric motors from overloads and short circuits by opening the power circuit when the voltage rises above a predetermined value. There are two types of auto switches – budgetary thermal and more expensive magnetic ones; thermal switches can withstand significant voltage drops, but are sensitive to ambient temperature; magnetic ones are more accurate and work in any environment.

Overload relay

Overload relays are installed in networks that experience regular short-term overloads when protection against false positives is required. The relay device is selected according to the exposure time; 10, 20 and 30 second delay models available; Also on sale are electronic relays with a customizable current range, which protect not only against overloads, but also against phase failure.

Built-in motor thermal protection

The built-in temperature protection of electric motors is implemented through thermal sensors mounted in the frontal parts of the stator winding; the ends of the sensor chain are connected to the terminals to which the switch is connected. The built-in device is usually used as an additional current protection of the electric motor against prolonged start-up, rotor jamming and phase failure. Thermal protection of the electric motor will insure in case the fuse or overload relay does not work, for which there can be various reasons:

high air temperature;
frequent restarts in a short period of time;
engine is closed and heats up quickly;
unstable operation of external protection.
