Automation of production processes has affected almost all areas of production. The range of sensors and programmable logic controllers (PLCs) developed to date allows minimizing human participation in the operation of technological equipment. To a minimum, not to zero, since the enterprise often uses various technological and engineering systems, which, due to objective factors, cannot correctly “dock” with each other (the impressive age of expensive, but not yet critically worn out equipment, the economic inexpediency of large-scale modernization on at this stage of the enterprise’s work). Also, do not forget about the good old principle “but when there is someone there, it is calmer” (yes, this factor often decides the presence of a staffing staff unit). But within reasonable limits, automation still solves many problems and can significantly reduce the cost of manufacturing a product (or providing a service).
Benefits of pump station automation
In terms of suitability for automation, pumping stations are a win-win. If you have a pumping unit (a water supply pumping station, a sewage pumping station – a sewage pumping station, a heating and hot water supply pumping station, a station for pumping and supplying liquids and products) that operates on a water supply or other network with variable or constant load, then automatic maintenance a given head or flow rate at a control point is the only correct decision. Firstly, you save energy, secondly, you extend the life of the pump and its electric motor, and thirdly, you increase the resource and operational reliability of the pipeline system.
Moreover, this degree of automation often does not provide for the creation of a separate centralized control and alarm system (usually small pumping stations), but if necessary, it can be easily connected to them. For example, a pumping unit works to maintain a given head at a point and does this using a closed-loop frequency converter using a pressure converter. The operator’s task is simply to set the desired pressure on the transducer, then the system works fully automatically. But if tomorrow it will be necessary to bring the monitoring or control of this system to the operator’s room, then this can be easily done using a data exchange protocol such as Modbus RTU (or other) and an information cable line. Obviously, automation can be gradual and versatile in terms of communication capabilities.
The role of automation elements in the operation of the diagnostic system for preventing breakdowns
In contrast to the planned preventive system for routine maintenance of equipment, this system is good in that it stops (or signals an accident without stopping) the mechanism only when one or more parameters controlled by the system go beyond tolerances. For example, the temperature sensor of the windings of an electric motor can be not just contact, but thermoresistive. Thus, in the controller, we can set a preliminary light or sound alarm if the winding temperature exceeds 70 degrees, but at the same time below 78. The maintenance service will understand that overheating is not critical, but is already taking place, and will take appropriate measures to repair, without nerves and haste. In this case, you can set time delays for certain events (taking into account the physics of the phenomenon) for manual or automatic switching to backup equipment.
Pump station PLC
The key element of the automation system is the PLC (programmable logic controller) – this is the “brain” of the whole process, it is also the controller of the correctness of execution. Controllers can be either freely programmable in standard programming languages, or with a pre-filled program for a specific task (ventilation, for example).

The price range of PLC boards is “dictated” by the brand of the controller and sensors, the number of PLC inputs / outputs, its communication capabilities, etc. It often happens that a Schneider Electric controller can have a comparable cost to the domestic Raut Automatic controllers, so for the right choice you always need to make a miscalculation for a specific task.
Equipping the PLC board
To power controllers and sensors, as a rule, you need a low voltage (24 V DC), respectively, a power supply unit or power supplies are installed, sometimes quite powerful; also in PLC boards a large number of terminals are used, which are necessary for making external and internal connections and make it convenient to install and monitor electrical circuits during operation.
If the PLC is installed in the same switchboard with power equipment (loaded machines, frequency converters, etc.), it is necessary to maintain a certain temperature in it, respectively, a ventilation (or heating) system is needed, and sometimes air conditioning, temperature sensors inside shield.
If the cabinet is installed in conditions of increased dustiness of the air, high or low temperatures, there are requirements for an increased IP of the cabinet, which entails an increase in the price of the board case. All these factors greatly influence the final cost of the complete product.
